Ugly Sweater Quilt Pattern

The idea was born pre-Christmas, hence the name. The prototype quilt is a collaborative effort by Kathy and 5 friends, Ann, Faith, Janet, Laurie, and Sheena, who generously agreed to make blocks in all four sizes to be included in this quilt which would be our pattern cover model and, ultimately, be donated to a charitable cause (at time of writing that charity has yet to be determined). Based on feedback while this project was in the making, a couple of minor improvements were made in the design so not all blocks in the cover photo appear exactly as per the pattern.

We hope you enjoy the fun and possibilities the Ugly Sweater Quilt pattern offers you as much as we do! Prepare to dig through your stash for those novelty prints you just had to have but are not sure how to use. Trade with friends to add to the variety. Most importantly, have fun in the process!

The construction of the blocks also generated ideas about how this pattern might be used... Think a group project for your quilt guild's community outreach, eye-spy quilts for little ones in your life, jersey-styled sweaters for a sports fanatic, or a launching off spot for creative bed-time stories... The possibilities are endless!

Skill level: Beginner friendly

Techniques: Foundation paper piecing, straight piecing

Project sizes: Throw (58” x 84”), Twin (71” x 84”), Full (84” x 97”), Queen (97” x 110”)

Recommended tools: freezer paper, add-a-quarter ruler, rotary cutter, 6"x24" ruler, rotary cutter, 50wt (or finer) thread

Recommended fabrics: Feature prints and complementary solids, tone-on-tones, blenders, small-scale prints
